It made sense because so much of my work has always been about finding ways of doing business that feel more considered, more human and more connected to the person actually doing the work.

If you’re interested in the space between business, intuition, creativity and being human, you can subscribe here

The longer I worked on the book, though, and probably the longer I worked inside businesses generally, the more I realised there was something else running underneath it all.

Structure.

I know structure can sound a little dry, especially in creative, intuitive and heart-led spaces. It can bring to mind visions of corporate life. Of systems, productivity for the sake of productivity, complicated project management boards and being told there is yet another part of your business (or life) that you should optimise.

That isn’t really what I mean when I talk about structure.

I mean taking that incredible vision you have for what you want to bring to the world, the things that currently only exist in your head, and working out what needs to exist around it so it can actually be brought into form.

If you have an idea for an offer, for example, the idea itself is only one part of it. Eventually someone needs to understand what it is, know how to buy it, receive what they were promised, move through the experience and know what happens next. You need some way of delivering it without reinventing everything every time. If other people are involved, they need enough information to do their part without constantly coming back to you.

That is structure.
<div The content system that means every idea doesn’t disappear into your Notes app. The boundary that means you aren’t making the same decision over and over again depending on how tired you are that day. It is knowing who is responsible for what, what matters now, what can wait and where information actually lives.

For me, Structure with Soul is about creating enough of that around your work that the business can carry more of its own weight.

I’ve spent more than eight years working behind the scenes of purpose-led businesses, usually with founders who have no shortage of ideas. Often there is a very clear vision too. My role has been to help work out what needs to happen between the idea and the reality of it: what needs to be decided, what needs to be built, what needs simplifying, where support is missing and how all the moving parts affect each other.

Sometimes that becomes an offer or a launch. Sometimes it means changing the way the business is structured, building a system, rethinking content or visibility, changing who is doing what, or realising the thing we thought was the problem actually isn’t.

After doing that for long enough, you start seeing the same kinds of patterns in very different businesses.

Someone might come in thinking they have a content problem, when what is actually making content difficult is that they haven’t decided what they want to be known for anymore.

Someone might think they need another team member, when the real problem is that nobody is quite clear on who owns what.

Someone might have a business that is doing perfectly well by every obvious measure, while privately feeling that the way they have built it doesn’t suit them anymore.

That part of the work has always made sense to me because I’ve always looked at things that way. I notice connections. I want to know what is sitting underneath the thing we are talking about, what else it is affecting, what changed before this started happening and whether we are actually solving the right problem.

The practical side of business is only one part of that for me, though.

We don’t become a separate person when we sit down to work. We bring our energy, capacity, identity, creativity, ambition, fears, relationships, family life, physical body, beliefs and whatever season we happen to be moving through with us. All of that shapes the decisions we make and what we are realistically able or willing to hold.

That is probably why my work and my own curiosity have gradually moved into areas that are harder to measure in the same way.

Human Design has changed the way I think about energy and the assumptions we make about how people are supposed to work. Gene Keys has given me different questions to sit with around patterns, relationships and the way we move through things. Learning to read the Akashic Records has opened up another way of listening and perceiving that I’m still very much exploring.

I’m interested in those things alongside strategy, systems, operations, content and data. I don’t feel any need to make one cancel out the other.

There are decisions where I want to see the numbers.

There are decisions where I know something has changed before I can completely explain why.

There are plenty where I want both.

That is part of what I want to explore here.

Why I wanted somewhere to write

I think I’ve been craving somewhere where I can actually finish a thought.

A podcast episode has a topic and some kind of direction. A TikTok needs to get to the point fairly quickly. Instagram requires its own kind of compression. My website has a job to do too; someone should be able to arrive there and understand what I do without needing to read six thousand words about how I arrived at it.

I like all of those formats for different reasons, although there are thoughts that don’t fit particularly well inside any of them.

Sometimes I notice something in a client business and then realise it connects to something happening in my own business. That reminds me of something I’ve been learning through Human Design or Gene Keys, which then changes the original question altogether. Sometimes I think I know what I believe about something and then keep finding exceptions to it.

I want somewhere I can stay with those thoughts for longer.

I don’t necessarily want to turn them into five lessons or decide what the takeaway is before I’ve even worked out what I think.

That is what I want Structure with Soul to be.

Business will be the anchor because that is the work I do and the world I spend a lot of time inside, although I want enough room here to write about the person doing the building too.

There will be essays about the business itself: offers, systems, support, visibility, content, strategy, capacity and the practical decisions involved in turning a vision into something that actually exists.

There will also be writing about identity, creativity, intuition, energy, self-trust, spirituality, seasons of life and what happens when you change faster than the structures around you do.

A lot of it will probably circle back to a question I ask constantly in my work:

What does this actually need right now?

I think that question is more useful than immediately asking what else we can add.

Sometimes a business genuinely needs a new strategy. Sometimes it needs someone else to carry part of the work. Sometimes there are too many moving pieces and the answer is to remove something. Sometimes nothing is particularly wrong and the founder has simply changed enough that the old way of doing things doesn’t make sense anymore.

Learning to tell the difference is a big part of the work.

Why Structure with Soul?

The word soul matters to me because I don’t want structure to become something we impose on ourselves simply because that is how business is apparently supposed to be done.

I want the structure to make sense for the thing we are actually trying to create and for the person who has to live inside it.

If you care deeply about your work, having more structure around it doesn’t make it less creative or less intuitive. Often it means the work has a better chance of becoming real without requiring you to personally remember, initiate and carry every part of it.

A process means you don’t have to work out the same steps every time.

A system means information can exist somewhere other than your brain.

Support means another person can take genuine responsibility for something rather than simply waiting for you to tell them what to do next.

A clear strategy means you can make choices about where your time and energy go instead of treating every good idea as equally urgent.

Those things create space.

They also make it possible for a business to grow without automatically requiring more and more of the founder.

That is what I’ve been trying to put language around through my work, through the book I’m writing, through Soulful Strategies and now here.

I’m sure some of what I write will be practical. Some of it will probably go somewhere much more personal or spiritual. There will be things I feel quite certain about and others I’m still testing against my own experience.

I’m also completely open to changing my mind.

For now, Structure with Soul is the phrase that best describes what I keep coming back to: how do we give meaningful work enough structure to become what we can see it becoming, while still making sure there is a whole human life around it?

That is what I want to keep thinking about here.

I’m glad you found your way in.

Kathleen
<div
